TRICKY TRIPTYCH PAINTINGS A FLOWING INSPIRATION

High Spring was a commission based on a painting completed in late 2019 and early 2020 titled Inspiration.  My style with florals evolved since then so I had great joy in creating this triptych; with the joyful color and energy of the Inspiration painting; but in my newer style.

The process for the new paintings began. The first step was a meeting at the client’s residence to see and measure the space so we could determine what size canvases would work best. As soon as I saw her orange walls I knew that this was going to be a fantastic project.

Since this was such a large triptych, I had to set up my studio to accommodate the canvases so they could all be next to each other so the art would flow from one piece to the other.  With a total length of 120”, this was tricky, even in my rather large studio space.

I started the paintings with a light blue sky and then the texture that would become the first stage of flowers. Following that, resin is applied, into which I embed gold and copper leaf, as well as aluminum shavings for sparkle.

When the resin is cured, back to the easel for more texture to paint more flowers and I also start to add more vibrant colors. This layering continues until I’m satisfied with the work.

The happiest day of a commission process is when I hang the work and my client is thrilled.  It’s one of my most favorite feelings in the world.  I’m very fond of this particular client so that made the experience even more special.

The painting that led to “High Spring.” This was ultimately sold at a show in Colorado and shipped to the patron’s office in Texas.
