PSYCHEDELIC TURTLES AND PEACEFUL PODS
In the past I have been known for my animals and sea life works. Lately, I’ve been very busy painting many florals so my creature features have been neglected. In February I worked on a couple of different sea life paintings. Everyone loves turtles so I started with “Psychedelic Surfing” by creating an abstract background. The bright colors were inspired by the front cover a Spring print issue of Florida Design Naples edition magazine.
While that canvas was drying, I did the same for “Peaceful Pods,” my dolphin painting, creating an abstract background in the cool, coastal blue tones. Next I took them to my resin studio along with a few others that needed their resin stage and laid them on a flat level surface. I always work on several resin pieces at a time for efficiencies sake. In fact, I usually work on 8 to 10 pieces at a time because there are so many varying stages and required drying times.
I poured the resin such as ground aluminum and broken mirror flakes and then let that cure for 24 hours. After the curing process, back to the easel we go where I laid in the design for the turtle and dolphins. Once the drawing of the turtle is in there, that’s when the fun begins and I can really play with some color. Same for the dolphins.
At a certain point with the acrylic painting stage, back to the resin we go after the acrylics are dry overnight. I put on another layer with more in the bellis mints added to the resin and it cures for an additional 24 hours. Back to the easel for more acrylic painting fun.
Once I am satisfied with the image it is time to paint the sides and prepare for hanging. Because I use resin in between my acrylic paint layers the size of my paintings can come out a little bit rough with drips and such. That being the case, I apply some texture to the sides before painting in a compatible color.
